Islamabad: Pakistan’s most anticipated General Elections 2024 came to an end. The elections where effortlessly turned the big tables, they also gave birth to huge controversies. The elections not only turned the political landscape but also sparked massive controversies and conflicts. Held on Feb 8th, the results of the elections were announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) after two days.
According to the authority, the National Assembly (NA), or the lower house of the country's parliament, independent candidates got the most seats, apparently 101 seats, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of the previous government achieved 75 seats and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Parliamentarians of former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari acquired 54 seats. While Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen Pakistan, Pakistan Muslim League (Zia-ul-Haq Shaheed), Pashtoonkhwa National Awami Party Pakistan, Balochistan Awami Party, Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party, and the National Party each obtained one seat, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan gained seventeen seats, Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam Pakistan got four seats, the Pakistan Muslim League acquired three seats, and the Balochistan National Party was given two seats.
However, the election results that were coming on the night of the election seemed to be quite different than the results announced by the ECP. This gave birth to many controversies as there were allegations of rigging and false vote counting. The government's decision to switch off mobile phones and the internet on Election Day also received huge criticism from local as well as international media. Many political parties submitted complaints to the High Court to perform the vote counting again and to avert rigging and manipulation.
Moreover, as the independent candidates backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf got the most seats, this ignited many questions. Will the independent candidates form the government or will they join the other two big parties including PMLN or PPP? According to analysts, Pakistan might have to observe weeks of political unrest due to the constant threat of violent protests and a biased military response.
