PAKISTAN APPROVES GREEN BUILDING & RAINWATER HARVESTING CODES FOR THE FIRST TIME

In a historic step toward environmental sustainability, the federal cabinet has approved Pakistan’s first-ever Green Building Code and Rainwater Harvesting Provisions. Announced by the Ministry of Science and Technology, these groundbreaking policies aim to combat climate change, conserve energy, and address the country’s growing water scarcity.

Spearheaded by Minister Khalid Hussain Magsi and Secretary Sajid Baloch, and developed under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision, the codes were formulated through extensive consultations with provinces, federal ministries, and stakeholders, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Green Building Code applies to all new buildings with four or more floors, mandating energy-efficient lighting, solar design, green roofs, renewable energy integration, and the use of eco-friendly materials. It also introduces Building Information Modeling (BIM) to enhance building management and indoor environmental quality while minimizing energy consumption.

Meanwhile, the Rainwater Harvesting Code requires residential, commercial, and industrial buildings to install systems for collecting, filtering, and reusing rainwater—promoting groundwater recharge and reducing reliance on municipal supplies.

These initiatives mark a pivotal move towards a climate-resilient Pakistan, ensuring cleaner air, water security, and a sustainable future for generations to come.
